"One of New Zealand's most internationally prominent and successful living artists, Max Gimblett returns to Auckland to lead a series of sumi ink drawing workshops.
Sumi-e is an ancient form of Japanese ink painting that developed from the practice of Japanese and Chinese calligraphy and is spiritually rooted in Zen Buddhism. Sumi-e literally means 'ink pictures'. The aim is to depict the spirit, rather than the semblance of the subject matter." - from Auckland Art Gallery website.
I was allowed half an hour to document the beginning of the workshop, provided I was silent and invisible. My thanks to Kim O'Loughlin (Auckland Art Gallery), Amie Hammond (Gow Langsford Gallery), and of course Max Gimblett himself, for making it possible.
